Installation and Migration

LOGINventory can only be installed on Windows computers, but can also be used on other operating systems. LOGINventory requires a Microsoft SQL Server database to manage the collected data. This is already included in the setup. The system requirements for installation are described here.

New Installation

Attention

Before the installation, you should check that Windows does not need to be restarted due to the previous installation of Windows Updates, otherwise it can come to problems with the installation of the Microsoft SQL Server.

When installing LOGINventory, individual components can be deselected. In order to enjoy the full range of functions, however, all components should be installed.

By default, the LOGINventory database is preset on the computer on which LOGINventory was installed. In the settings is described how to transfer the database, change, or select another provider.

Update Installation

If a version of LOGINventory8 has already been installed, a more recent setup can be run at any time. LOGINventory will be updated as long as the installation is done into the same directory.

!!! important "Important: Updating the Offline Agent". If the offline-agent is used, the clients may need to be provided with a current version of LOGINfo.exe so that the data sent by the clients still matches the database version. The update for the clients can be provided after the setup by running the offline agent wizard again and selecting the option "Create loginfo_script.zip for selfupdate".

!!! important "Important: Updating the portable LMC". If the portable LOGINventory version is used on client machines, it must be updated after setup so that users of the portable version also work with the current version. To do this, the wizard for publishing the portable LMC must be run again. This only works if the portable version is not used by any user during this time, otherwise the files cannot be overwritten.

Migration from Previous LOGINventory Versions

LOGINventory8 can be installed in parallel to previous versions, but must not be installed in the same directory as a previous version. Only then will the previous version remain intact.

Info

If scan definitions have already been created in a previous version of LOGINventory, they are automatically adopted in the latest version.

Attention

LOGINventory8 no longer supports Oracle databases and Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition! If you have used one of these databases with a previous version of LOGINventory, you must first transfer the old version of the database to a supported version (see manuals of the old versions) and then migrate it to the latest LOGINventory version.

When migrating the database from LOGINventory7 to LOGINventory8, you have two options to choose from:

Direct Migration

Open the Settings with the tab Database and select the database from LOGINventory7 in the dropdown menu. Then click on Verify. The database will now be migrated in a short time.

Attention

After the direct migration - also called in-place migration - you no longer have the possibility to access the database with an older LOGINventory version!

If you want to keep the old database, but still want to migrate all data, you should first transfer the database in LOGINventory7 (insert as duplicate). Then you can perform the direct migration with the duplicate as described above.
