HP Network Printers Showing as device with IP Address

Post1. Apr 2008, 17:36

We have about 100 HP printers on our network. Our LOGINventory scans put these in the devices list but about half of them show up only with their IP Addresses in the name and unique identifier fields, and half show up with their system name (host name). None of the printers are setup in DNS. Why would half show up with the system name and half with the IP address? How can I get all of them to show up with their system name? I'm on the latest version of LOGINventory.

Hello,

LOGINventory uses 'reverse DNS resolution' to detect the hostname of devices.
If you would create DNS entries in you default DNS zone + reverse zone, LOGINventory will use it.

Hello - IT! Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Next step: Check DNS.

Thanks for the reply. I can do that but how come half of the host names are getting picked up somehow without them being in DNS zone or the reverse zone?

Hi,

some (newer) printers actually perform a DNS registration if they were configured to use DHCP.
